The Meters – Cabbage Alley (1972)

with 3 comments

The Meters - Cabbage Alley (1972), funk, soulNew York based Josie Records had gone bankrupt in 1971, so Cabbage Alley was released on Reprise Records in ’72. The New Orleans quartet emphasize vocals a bit more on this record than previous, abandoning a little bit of the classic earthy gritty feel from classic L.P.’s such as The Meters and Look-Ka Py Py. However, there is still plenty of guitar/organ driven funk jams. There is also a soulful rendition of Neil Young’s “Birds” from his 1970 record After the Gold Rush. Tracks 11 and 12 are bonus tracks, not on the original record.

1. You’ve Got to Change (You’ve Got to Reform)
2. Stay Away
3. Birds
4. Flower Song
5. Soul Island
6. Do the Dirt
7. Smiling
8. Lonesome And Unwanted People
9. Gettin’ Funkier All The Time
10. Cabbage Alley
11. Chug Chug Chug-A-Lug (Push And Shove), Pt. I
12. Chug Chug Chug-A-Lug (Push And Shove), Pt. II
